Jeremiah 1:4-10, Isaiah 58:9-11, Luke 13:10-17
As I read the readings for today the word “rescue” came to me. Starting with our opening Psalm, David reaches out to God, asking to be rescued. He praises God for saving him and for being his rock of refuge. He has hope that God will deliver him from those who are evil and cruel.
In Jeremiah, the Lord is telling him to not be afraid and that He will rescue him as he fulfills God’s plans for him. Jeremiah was afraid and thought he was too young for such a calling. God promised that He would be with him.
Isaiah tells us that when we call, the Lord will answer. He will be there for us when we need Him. However, in this passage there is a condition: If we do away with the yoke of oppression, pointing fingers, malicious talk; if we spend ourselves in behalf of the hungry, satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then our light will rise in the darkness and our night will become like the noonday. He will guide us always, satisfy our needs, strengthen us, and care for us like a well-watered garden.
Lastly, there’s the story in Luke of the woman who was healed on the Sabbath. Jesus set her free, or rescued her, from her infirmity, even though he wasn’t supposed to “work” on the Sabbath. She praised God for her healing.
All of these passages are so comforting for me. I need God to rescue me. Do any of you ever feel that way?
There are so many opinions and ideas out there beween the news, social media, AI, friends, acquaintances, that I get overwhelmed, not knowing what or who to believe. In some ways I think it’s a curse for us to be so educated and curious. I like “ignorance is bliss”.
So I need God to be my Rock of Refuge. When I read scripture, contemplate and pray, I get grounded. I know that God is real and will help me through my trials and tribulations. I try to follow Jesus’ gospel of loving one another and caring for others. None of us are perfect. It’s a lifelong journey for us to become what God wants us to be, but with the help of the Holy Spirit, humbling ourselves, having faith in Jesus, God will rescue us!
