So, who do you say that Jesus is?….
Peter says that Jesus is the Messiah. What is the Messiah to you?…..
I looked up what the Messiah was to the Jewish people at that time. This is from Wikipedia: In the Abrahamic religions, which are Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, a messiah, in Arabic means 'the anointed one', and is a saviour or liberator of a group of people. The concepts of a Messianic Age originated in Judaism, in which a messiah is a king or High Priest traditionally anointed with holy anointing oil.
So 'The Messiah'was often referred to as 'King Messiah', a fully human non-deity Jewish leader, physically descended from a human genetic father of an unbroken paternal Davidic line through King David and King Solomon. He will accomplish predetermined things in a future arrival, including the unification of the tribes of Israel, the gathering of all Jews to Israel, the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem, the ushering in of a Messianic Age of global universal peace, and the annunciation of the world to come. This can be found in the books of the prophets.
So I wonder how Peter saw Jesus as the Messiah. Did he see Him as a future king? Or perhaps a savior to free them from the Romans. Let’s talk about the word savior. What does salvation or savior mean to you?…..
Well, I wanted to look into who Jesus says He is, and since we may be doing this book study called “Finding I Am”, I thought this would be a good introduction to that.
I took the passages out of that book and looked them up. They’re on the back of your flyer.
John 6:35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 10:7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.”
John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
John 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”
John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
John 15:1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.”
These passages don’t sound like a “King Messiah” to me. They sound more like a “soul Messiah”; someone who will care for our inner beings, and guide us to be who He wants us to be.
Amen
